President Joe Biden’s dismal performance in his debate against former President Donald Trump threatens to undermine his candidacy and causes panic among Democrats.
Biden frequently froze and misspoke during his first, and probably only, debate against Trump on June 27. Notably, the 81-year-old chief executive lost his line of thought for about nine seconds, looking down at his lectern before showing up again to declare that he “finally beat Medicare.”
Even his soft, scratchy voice failed to win voters over. Aides attributed this to a cold he seemingly picked up during his week-long out-of-the-public view preparation for the debate held in Atlanta. Several Democratic Party sources shared their pessimism to the New York Post, with one source describing Biden’s performance as “abysmal.” They continued: “If I knew nothing about Donald Trump before that debate and judged him solely on that performance, I’d vote for him.”
A second source meanwhile said it was to be decided whether Biden was still going to be the party’s nominee – with two months to go before the Democratic National Convention in August, to be held in Chicago.
“Biden misspoke,” the second source quipped. “He saved Medicare, but now someone needs to save Biden.”
A third Democratic insider offered no defense when asked to reply to Biden’s Medicare comment. “I don’t know what he meant,” the simply said.
Former New York State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, a Democrat, acknowledged that Biden is a “good, honorable man” with “much to be proud of” in a post on X following the June 27 debate. She nevertheless acknowledged that “it is time to step aside and call off this run.”
Other Democrats decided to brief secretly, with CNN reporter John King starting the network’s post-debate coverage by reporting “a deep, a wide and a very aggressive panic in the Democratic Party.”
“It started minutes into the debate – and it continues right now,” King added. “It involves party strategists. It involves elected officials. It involves fundraisers, and they’re having conversations about the president’s performance, which they think was abysmal, which they think will hurt other people down the party ticket, and they’re having conversations about what they should do about it.”
“Questions about Biden’s age and frailty have dragged down his polling numbers for months,” NBC News pointed out. “The public issues are aggravated by carefully edited videos, some of which have gone viral, that cut off appropriate parts of an event, making it appear as if Biden is wandering or confused.”
“This was Biden’s first chance since the State of the Union speech to dismiss that narrative. Instead of a fresh start, several Democrats viewed it as a moment for panic.”
A party strategist who has served on presidential campaigns lamented how “Democrats just committed collective suicide,” pointing out that the June 27 debate “is a nail in the political coffin.”
“Biden sounds hoarse, looks tired and is babbling,” the strategist continued. “He is reaffirming everything voters already perceived. President Biden can’t win.”
A Democratic consultant who deals with down-ballot races also echoed the strategist’s thoughts. “It’s hard to argue that we shouldn’t nominate someone else,” they commented.
